Core and Supplementary Activities in Language Teaching

Due Saturday, June 14 11:59 pm

Answer the following questions:

1. Dr. Stephen Krashen synthesizes  his theories of second/foreign language learning in five hypotheses. Describe the one that you finf the most interesting. How can you apply this to your teaching?

2. Watch the video by Dr. Krashen once again. Compare and contrast the first and second mini-lesson. What did he do in the second demonstration that helped the audience understand? According to him, what is the only way to acquire a language?

3. What's the difference between COMPETENCE and PERFORMANCE in Language Learning? Describe a supplementary activity proposed by Krashen to help Competence and one to help Performance.

  1. ANSWERS:
    1. The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis: Give simple messages that students understand (comprehensible input)
    2. In the first lesson he just talks, but in the second lesson he used the corporal language and the audience understood. The only way to acquire a language is at the speak moment (memorize vocabulary, dialogues, etc)
    3. Chomsky separates competence and performance; he describes 'competence' as an idealized capacity that is located as a psychological or mental property or function and ‘performance’ as the production of actual utterances. In short, competence involves “knowing” the language and performance involves “doing” something with the language. The difficulty with this construct is that it is very difficult to assess competence without assessing performance.

  2. 1. Among the Hypothesis presented by Krashen the most interesting for me is The Natural Order Hypothesis, it consist that the students take their time to learn or acquire some structures of a language. In my teaching I should be more patient with my students when they still make mistakes in present simple especially the third person.
    2. In the first lesson Krashen speaks German using long phrases , maybe difficult vocabulary for a beginner course and in the second lesson he speaks using body language and repetition and comprehensible input. This is the only way to acquire a language.
    3. Competence is the knowledge about a capacity and performance is the production or ability of doing something.
To improve competence, it is important to provide the students with familiar topics and to improve the performance we can provide students word order sentences.

  4. 1. Stephen Krashen’s theory that got my intention was the Natural Order Hypothesis. because I understand that the student needs time to learn the structure of a language, In that case: English language.
2.In the first lesson He spoke with words and long sentences that were difficult to understand, but when he started to use gestures and few words was more understandable.
3.Competence is the ability that you have to do something and always be the best. Performance is the production of what you've learned.

  5. 1. The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis: Give simple messages and the student its able to understand.
    2. He didn’t follow the steps from the “Pace model”. As teachers we should know how to catch the student attention plus it was difficult to understand but when he star using corporal language the people understood.
    3. Competence is knowledge and performance is the production or ability of doing something.

  6. 1.I think the Natural order is very interesting, because it shows in wich order your brain usually learns. With this hypothesis the students won´t be frustated.
2.In the first lesson he just talked in German and no one understood him, but in the second one he spoke in German but he used something tha in both languages is the same and everybody can undersatnd, his body.
3.Competence is what you have in your mind all the rules and structures, but perfomance is when you talk or do something.

    1. The input Hypothesis: the learned improves and progresses along the “natural order” when he receives second language “input”.
      2. At the beginning the people don’t understand what he is saying for that reason he has the necessity to use the corporal language to people understand. The only way to acquire a language is when the people memorize dialogues, vocabulary and obviously the teacher has to give to people messages they can understand.
      3. Competence: making input more comprehensible and Performance: untangling the composing process.

  8. 1. For me, the most interesting hypothesis explained by Dr. Stephen Krashen is The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis because it only consist on giving simple messages that the student will be able to understand.

    2. In the first part, Dr. Krashen spoke a complete different language (German) using long sentences with a really complex vocabulary so then, nobody in the audience could get the message. However, in the second part he starts using bodylanguage in order to make people in the audience understand what he is trying to say even though he was not speaking english.

    3. When we talk about 'competence', we are refering to 'learning', and when we mention 'performance' it refers to 'producing'.

  9. 1. the adquisition gives simple examples so the student can understand.
    2. he used complex vocabulary and nobody was able to understand until he used body language and people undestood.
3.compentence is the knowledgh thay you have about grammar structure and perfomance is the process of talking.

  10. 1. I think that the affective filter hypothesis is very important when you teach a second language.
I always try to be patient and friendly with my students in my classes in order to have a nice enviroment where my students feel motivated to participate.
I always encourage them to participate although they make mistakes because learning is a process along our lives.Nobody is perfect but we mus try to be better each day.

    2. He used boby language in the second mini lesson so it resulted be better mainly when learners are beginners.
The only way to acquire a language is when teaches try to use natural, authentic and meaninfful activities in the classroom.

    3. Competence is to command some knowledge and performance is the ability to produce a kind of knowledge.

  11. 1.The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis beacuse give simple messages that students understand no matter the level they are.
    2. in the first lesson he just talk without body expressions so almost nobody could unterstand but in the second he tried to make it with his body language so the could understand.
3.ompentence is the knowledge and Performance is the production of what you've learned.

  12. 1. The Acquisition Learning hypothesis give messages that can be understood easily, no matter what level of English they have.
    2. In the first lesson free speech expressions. but in the second lesson uses body language that people can understand
    3. The competition is described as knowledge of learning and performance is to do something with language (with learned).

  13. 1.The acquisition of learning: Stephen Krashen tells us to give simple messages to students so that they understand better.
2.the first lesson only talks but in the second lesson, use your body to show the public what they are around trying to explain. and that is the only way that the audience or public understanding.
    3. competence is defined as an idealized capacity is as a psychological or mental property or function and "performance" as the production of statements reales.en conclusion is very difficult to assess the competition without assessing performance.

  14. 1. Well for me, the most interesting is The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis because it is simple and students can undertand easily.
    2. In the first presentation they just talk but anybody could understand because he uses a different language from the audience, in contrast in the secodn presentation he not only speaks but also uses the body to explain what he is trying to say.
    3. Competence is the ability you use to do thing in a correct manner and Performance is the production.

  15. 1)The Learning Hypothesis by Dr.Stephen krashen: when students learn english describe with natural order they can understand input.
2)First lesson he show examples in german in bad way
Second lesson: use corporal language using the hands.
in my opinion the only acquire a language is speak clear, slowly and many times.
3)Competence: capacity mental describes the ability to do things "learning english"
Performance: with our ability process mental ,help use english words clear.

  16. 1. The Acquisition - Learning Hypothesis give messages that can be understood easily. The acqisition is the subconscious and learning is conscious.
    2. .In the first lesson he just talk without body expressions so almost nobody could unterstand, but in the second one he spoke in German.
    3. Competence: Learners can use conscious knowledge of language as a monitor, for correcting the output of the acquired system.

  17. 1. I find The Input Hypothesis very interesting because if they understand what we want to say, their affective filter will not be high and they'll feel more confident. I'd apply this to my teaching by using a simple language and gestures.
    2. In Krahen's 1st mini lesson he did not use any tool to make it comprehensible , but in the second he used body language, which was a lot more understandable. For him, the only way to adquire is by understanding messages.
    3. A .Competence is the knowledge we have, such us grammar rules, vocabulary but Performance is the result of applying what we know.
    B. Supplementary activity to help Competence: Giving background information (images, simple reading, etc.)
Supplementary activity to help Performance: Writing short essays (the students will have a model and the teacher will help them to organise their ideas.

  18. 1. The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis is the most interesting, students get the idea of what they are learning easily.
    2. In fist part of the speech they don't understand what the techer is saying but in the next part they could understand because the teacher uses body language, in both cases he spokes in a different language of the student.
    3. Competence is as an idealized capacity that is located as a psychological or mental property or function and Performance is the production of actual utterances.

  19. 1. The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis: Giving simple messages and dynamic exercises so that students can understand.
    2. In the first lesson Dr. Krashen just talks, but in the second lesson he drew on the body language, repetition and comprehensible input. In that way the audience could understand. Using these techniques is the only way to catch the students attention, so they won’t get bored and they will find it interesting to adapt with this method.
    3. Chomsky separates these 2 concepts: competence and performance, describing COMPETENCE as a capacity that involves knowledge and PERFORMANCE as the production of doing something.
To improve competence, I would provide students with current issues easy to understand to make them have an easier and faster comprehension (images, etc). And get a good PERFORMANCE, I would give them some homeworks with funny developments so they could find it awesome, for example: short essays or coments about their favorite topic, etc.

  21. 1. I strongly beleive that Acquisition Learning Hypothesis is more important because through simple messages and dynamic exercises students can understand.
2.In the second lesson he starts speaking german and it becomes pretty boring for the students because they dont understand at all what he is saying. He uses a difficult vocabulary for beginners. He doesn't follow the steps from the Pace Model.
In the second part he starts using the body language which is very important because thanks to it the audience can understand what he says.
    3. "Competence" is the knowledge that we have such as rules, vocabulary etc and "Performance" is how we apply what we already know.

  22. 1. The most interesting is: THE ACQUISITION LEARNING HYPOTHESIS
According to Dr. Krashen, there are two ways of developing language ability. Acquisition involves the subconscious acceptance of knowledge where information is stored in the brain through the use of communication; this is the process used for developing native languages. Learning, on the other hand, is the conscious acceptance of knowledge ‘about’ a language (i.e. the grammar or form). Krashen states that this is often the product of formal language instruction.
According to this theory, the optimal way a language is learned is through natural communication. I’m not English teacher but I think the ideal to apply this it’s creating a situation where in language is used in order to carry out authentic purposes. This is turn, will help students to ‘acquire’ the language instead of just ‘learning’ it.
    2. At first, he spoke in German, but nobody understood him because of people didn’t catch the message and even worse I think, they didn’t understand at all.
On the other hand, in the second demonstration Krashen used corporal language, he explained to people the message with signs and gestures. Even though people neither was understanding nor spoke German, finally they caught the message.
Dr. Krashen clearly says: We acquire a language in only one way - when we understand messages, that's it.
    3. COMPETENCE is the system of linguistic knowledge possessed by native speakers of a language. It is in contrast to the concept of PERFORMANCE, the way the language system is used in communication.
    SUPPLEMENTENTARY ACTIVITY FOR:
COMPETENCE - Making Input more comprehensible-
    A. Simplification of language:
    - The use of more common vocabulary and shorter, less complex sentences.
    - Studies have shown that vocabulary simplification made reading passages more comprehensible for children.
    - It’s important, however, to note that overusing this technique could impair comprehension by removing elements crucial to comprehension
    SUPPLEMENTENTARY ACTIVITY FOR :
PERFORMANCE - Lowering the Output Filter-
    - Especially active in the case of pronunciation in adult second language acquirers .
    - Output Filter may be a cause of fossilization.
    - Activities that lower the Affective Filter will also lower the Output Filter
    - Ways of dealing with Output Filter: Sentence Combining and practice constructing complex sentence types that the writer has already acquired but doesn’t normally use.

  24. 1. The input hypothesis is a really good one, because the teacher should give messages that students understand and a little bit higher level (+1) for students more advanced which is really a good way of making the student feels that he’s learning easily and making progress slowly but surely.
    2. In the first lesson, he spoke quickly in another language and used complex sentences; whereas in the second one besides speaking more slowly he used body language for the audience to get the idea of what he was saying much easily.
He said that the only way to acquire a language is when people understand messages in other words; when we understand what people tell us (comprehensible input).
    3. “Competence” is all the knowledge that we already have (grammar, vocabulary, etc), while “performance” is all that we produce.
An activity to help competence would be making input more comprehensible and for performance would be untangling the composing process.

  25. . The Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis is the most important and interesting for me because it helps to students to learn and understand better the class of the way more easily possible.
    2. In the first lesson, the audience can’t understand because they don’t know the language and in the second demonstration, the audience can understand the message because Dr. Krashen associates what he says using their hands and it make the people understand what he’s trying to say.
    3. Competence, being an ideal, is located as a psychological or mental property. This is in contrast to performance, which refers to an actual event.

  26. 1. The acquisition learning hypothesis give messages that can be understood easily, eventhough the subject looks impossible given the dynamic set.

    2. In the first part, do not use anything for the understanding of his subject, and no one has hico That notion what to say, but in the second part using body language and so Could you understand.

    3. Competetence: when you have in you what you have to do, you know and know what is necessary, but the Performance: the action, the realization of thought.

  28. 1. Stephen Krashen tells us about The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis where you give simple messages to the learners that they can understand better. It can be to apply with various dynamics what develop our new language.
    2. At the first lesson Stephen Krashen only speak but anybody understands however at the second lesson he speaks with signs and the public can understand very well. The only way to acquire a language is to repeat with the body and feels that moment and reproduces dialogues and gets vocabulary.
    3. Competence is the ability you have to do something, but performance is when you reproduce something without problems.

  29. 1. The acquisition-learning hypothesis is a really good one; actually I dare to say that is the only one that really works for both students and teachers. I would apply this to my students by speaking in English solely and using body language to make my inputs more understandable.
    2. In the second lesson Mr. Krashen used body language, a “universal language” signs that everybody can understand even if they do not know the language which is very useful because I don’t speak German but I could understand almost everything he said by his movements which is really useful. According to him, the only way a person can learn a language with is by messages he/she can understand which is called comprehensible input.
    3. Competence is all the knowledge a person has, all the things a person knows, grammatical rules are examples of COMPETENCE, whereas PERFORMANCE is how a person develops his/her competence, I mean, all the practice in a language.
